It is really tough to say exactly without specifications of your machine and some diagnostic information.

It does sound like something with Word not closing properly or something as that is the only time I have experienced it opening documents in that fashion.

Is there anything about recovery files on the left hand side of the window when you open Word? That would be an indication of the application being closed or crashing.

Performance could be down to RAM or a slow hard drive and many other things.

I would refer back to my previous analogy though - if all you need is the most basic of Word processing features I would go with something tailored to those needs.

Open Office is a suite of applications just like Microsoft's Office Suite - to bad neither are as stellar as Weather Report Suite.

Give Open Office a download and install. You will have a Word-like application that will provide the same functionality and possible perform a bit better on your machine.

I've seen it do that on other computers here too. Could be a local issue if that's not normal.

Yeah, there are often recovery files on the left hand side. Even if I shut everything down. Grrr.

I need Word processing, but also need to send docs to people with regular Word and not have them need to go through any extra steps, as well as to receive docs and work on them. (I work as a writer/editor.) Does it do that?

You will have support for both the .DOC and .DOCX formats.
